Eduard Tubin Suite on Estonian Dance Tunes
Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 5
The concert is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the sister cities Kotka and Tallinn. Orchestras from both cities take the stage as a joint orchestra to perform significant works from Estonian and Finnish symphonic music. Eller’s “Dawn”, its crisply beautiful melodies and cool dignity have become a symbol of sorts for Estonian music. Tubin’s “Suite on Estonian Dance Tunes” is an example of pre-World War II treatment of folk songs in symphonic music. Symphony No. 5 was commissioned from Sibelius to celebrate his own 50th birthday. “Compared to previous works, I gave this symphony a more human form – close to earth and living,” described the composer himself. Today is also the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius and the 110th of Eduard Tubin.
