Eastern exotics in the tales of One Thousand and One Nights and the raging emotions of the warlike Altai nomads offer a colorful scenes and wild dances.
A hundred years ago, Russian culture was introduced in Paris at the “Russian Seasons” organized by Diaghilev and the performances now before you are precisely those that were presented in Paris from Mikhail Fokine’s choreography. The choreography of one of the founders and leading lights of Russian 20th century ballet has become legendary, it has great historic and artistic value. In addition to that, “Scheherazade” and “Polovtsian Dances” are simply colorful and exotic ballets, suitable for watching with the whole family. In “Scheherazade” we see the theme of the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Relating the tales in the language of choreography, the courtesan, in order to save her life, has to tell the ruler an fascinating story every night. The ballet conveys eastern exotics in a clear and beautiful manner. In “Polovtsian Dances” we catch a glimpse of the camp of warlike Altai nomads. From the world of princesses we have ended up among fierce warriors who terrified nations. A feast is in full swing – a raid has been successful and the chief demands a celebration.
