Antonio Vivaldi “Stabat Mater”, RV 621
Arcangelo Corelli Concerto grosso, Op. 6 No. 12
The programme consists of the works of two great Baroque composers – Antonio Vivaldi and Arcangelo Corelli. The concerto grosso as a genre was born in the Baroque period, they are performed by a Baroque trio (concertino) and a larger orchestra (ripieno). Corelli’s twelve concerto grossos are his finest works, this concert’s programme includes three of them.
Vivaldi’s works, with conductor Risto Joost as a soloist, deepen the concert’s mood. „Filiae maestae Jerusalem” tells of the mourning daughters of Jerusalem and “Stabat Mater” of a mother’s sadness:
Stabat Mater dolorosa, At the Cross her station keeping
juxta crucem lacrimosa, stood the mournful Mother weeping,
dum pendebat Filius. close to her Son to the last.
