VIRVE KURBEL, IGOR BELJAJEV period dances

Programme: Bernardo Pasquini, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Tarquinio Merula and Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger, late 16th and early 17th century Italian music and dances.

The theatre dances of the Baroque period developed in 17th century France. King Louis XIV, himself an excellent dancer, founded the Royal Academy of Dance to raise the standards of the dancing art. The French style was dominant in most of Europe, Italy included. It was performed in theatres and at court. The programme features the dances of the period’s most successful master – Louis Pécour, who danced at the Paris Opéra.

The concert’s opening piece is by a young Baroque artist from the Music School of the Old Town Educational College.
