All three world-famous short ballets: "Pictures at an exhibition", "Daphnis and Chloé" and "Boléro" make up a harmonious, fascinating and visually surprising whole. The culmination, of course, Ravel's hypnotic masterpiece "Boléro" is sure to leave you enchanted.
The Latvian National Ballet production of "Boléro…" is inspired by Maurice Ravel’s unforgettable works of "Boléro" and "Daphnis and Chloe" and Ravel's composition of Modest Mussorgsky’s piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition". The spectacle is in three acts, with choreography prepared by the Latvian, Polish and Hungarian young talents. All of the three world-famous works come together as a whole in harmony and offer plenty of surprises to the audience, with Ravel’s “Boléro” giving the performance a mesmerising finishing touch.
"Boléro… was inspired by the magnificent music of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro and Daphnis et Chloé, as well as his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The greatest challenge in this production is, without a doubt, the multifaceted Pictures at an Exhibition, which we are delighted to present to our audience in its entirety. This has been made possible by a pleiad of young and talented choreographers. Antons Freimans, Milana Komarova, Elza Leimane-Martinova, Aleksandra Astreina and Raimonds Martinovs bring original takes on familiar musical themes, creating an exhibit of unique choreography. Boléro… also tells the moving story of Daphnis and Chloé, which Hungarian choreographer Attila Egerházi has set to all-new choreography. And then, of course, there are the fiery rhythms of Boléro itself – a ballet loved by audiences around the globe, and beautifully interpreted by world-renown master Krzysztof Pastor. By combining exceptional choreography with contemporary multimedia technologies, scenography and costumes, I believe the result will be filled with innovative and breath-taking discoveries. We look forward to seeing you!”
Aivars Leimanis, Artistic Director of the Latvian National Ballet
The Latvian National Ballet is the only professional ballet company in Latvia. The more than ninety-year history of Latvian ballet has close ties with the finest traditions of the Russian school of classical ballet. In this way, the classical Russian ballet traditions were passed down from generation to generation, and eventually gave the world such ballet stars as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Māris Liepa, and Alexandr Godunov, each of whom trained right here in Riga. Since 1993, the artistic director if the Latvian National Ballet has been Aivars Leimanis.
