A bouquet of fascinating 20th century chamber music works. Schnittke with his “Moz’art a’la Haydn”, which is not lacking in surprises and the unexpected, pays homage to two great classics. Penderecki’s “String Trio” is a return to a more melodious and traditional music language, after forays into atonality and experimentation. Schönberg’s “Ode to Napoleon Bonaparte”, either deliberately or otherwise, creates a bridge between two highly dramatic periods in European history. Its text, based on the lines Lord Byron wrote in 1814 against the abuse of power, could not be a mere glimpse into history in the context of the war-torn 1940s.
