Johannes Brahms – String Sextet no. 1, Op. 18

The 19th century composers Brahms and Dvořák had good relations – the elder helped pave the younger colleague’s way towards international fame. With their trios and quartets, the famous symphonists also contributed greatly to the field of chamber music. The programme features a truly plentiful world of sound – in Dvořák’s quintet, the classical string quartet has been complemented with a contrabass. And Brahms’s work for two violins, two violas and two cellos is probably the best known sextet of them all.
