The Landes-Jugend-Symphonie- Orchester (LJO) Saar is a project initiated by the Landesmusikrat (LMR) Saar e.V. and the oldest funding measure of its kind in Saarland. Since its foundation in 1982, the LJO has primarily served to promote young musicians by introducing talented young people to orchestral playing and training participants depending to their individual musical skills and abilities. During two weeks a year – normally Easter and autumn holidays – young instrumentalists aged between 14 and 21 meet to work together and do a concert tour at the end. They have been previously selected in an audition. In section rehearsals they are taught by experienced members of professional orchestras before the whole ensemble works together for one week.
The LJO is being booked more and more frequently, so the young orchestra can present itself in public not only during the regular projects. Such opportunities are the annual New Year concerts for the Richard Wagner Verband and the Lions Club Saarlouis.
The concerts in the Saarland also aim to adress a new audience for classical music. The Saarland Youth Symphony Orchestra was awarded third place in the German Youth Orchestra Prize 2010/2011 by the "Jeunesses musicales" for its work and commitment in Saarland's musical life.
As a further task, the LJO Saar has set itself the goal of representing the Saarland, also on an international level. For this reason, the orchestra does concert tours to other countries every few years, such as Chile in 2007, Canada in 2010 and, most recently, Romania in 2013. These journeys do not only serve the purpose of representing the orchestra and it’s home country, but above all further the musical and social training of the young musicians and the cultural exchange, that is linked to that.
The Baltic concert tour in October 2018 also aims to represent the high musical level of our orchestra at renowned concert venues beyond the national borders.
